I am Dr. Maite Nascimento, a physician specialising in Psychiatry and a psychotherapist, with 15 years of clinical experience in Barcelona caring for children, adolescents and adults. Specialising in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, my practice focuses on clinical assessment and diagnosis, as well as on designing individualised interventions for a range of emotional, behavioural and relational difficulties.

My work starts from a holistic view of each person, seeking to understand not only the symptoms but also how they relate to their personal history, developmental stage, relationships and environment. I combine clinical assessment with psychotherapeutic intervention, involving the family and close environment when needed.

My aim is to support people through the different difficulties that can arise over the course of their development, helping them understand what is happening to them and find resources to face their challenges with greater security, autonomy and confidence.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

At the first appointment I carry out a full clinical assessment in which we explore the reasons for the visit, personal and medical history, and the current situation. Based on that assessment I propose a working diagnosis and we agree together on an individualised treatment plan. At follow-up visits we review progress and adjust the treatment to each case.

Whether to prescribe medication is assessed individually in each case, based on the clinical evaluation and the needs of each person. When indicated, pharmacological treatment can be part of the approach, though it is not always necessary nor the only intervention. Decisions are made jointly, always explaining the options and the reason for each recommendation.

Yes. I specialise in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and also see adults. For children and adolescents, when needed I include work with the family and coordination with the school environment and other professionals involved.

Yes. Psychiatric care can be combined with psychotherapy provided by another professional; in fact, in many cases the two complement each other. With the person's consent, I can coordinate with their psychologist to ensure coherent, shared care.

Yes, I can issue a report for your GP or insurer. It costs €50.

A psychiatrist is a physician specialising in mental health: they can make clinical diagnoses, assess overall health and, when necessary, prescribe medication, as well as offer psychotherapy depending on their training. A psychologist assesses and treats emotional and behavioural difficulties through psychotherapy but does not prescribe medication. The two roles are complementary and, in many cases, working together offers the best approach.
